Choosing the right tennis string can completely change how your racket plays. Strings are the engine of your racket, dictating power, control, spin, and how much shock travels to your arm.

Here is the breakdown of the five primary types of tennis strings, how they are built, and who should be playing with them.

1. Synthetic Gut

Synthetic gut is the baseline of tennis strings — it is the standard by which all other strings are measured for price and performance.

  • Construction: Typically a solid nylon core surrounded by one or two layers of smaller, outer wraps.

  • Benefits: Highly cost-effective and provides a very balanced, middle-of-the-road performance. It offers a decent mix of power, control, and comfort.

  • Drawbacks: It doesn’t excel in any single category. It won’t give you the massive spin of a polyester or the plush comfort of natural gut.

  • Best For: Beginners, recreational players, or anyone on a budget who wants a reliable, all-around string.

2. Multifilament

Multifilament strings were engineered to mimic the feel and performance of natural gut without the premium price tag.

  • Construction: Thousands of microscopic synthetic fibers (often nylon) are bundled and twisted together, then bound using a polyurethane resin.

  • Benefits: Exceptional comfort, elasticity, and power. Because it absorbs shock so well, it is highly recommended for players suffering from tennis elbow or arm and shoulder pain.

  • Drawbacks: They are prone to fraying and can break relatively quickly if you hit with heavy spin. They also tend to lose their tension faster than other materials.

  • Best For: Players with arm issues, older players, and those looking for maximum power and comfort over durability.

3. Polyester (Poly)

Polyester strings have revolutionized the modern, heavy-topspin game. If you watch the pros, almost all of them are using some form of poly.

  • Construction: A single, solid extrusion of plastic (a monofilament). Modern “co-polys” blend polyester with other chemical additives to improve feel and tension maintenance, and they are often shaped (e.g., hexagonal or octagonal) to bite the ball.

  • Benefits: Incredible durability, control, and spin potential. Poly strings have a “snapback” effect — they slide out of place upon impact and violently snap back, generating massive topspin.

  • Drawbacks: They are very stiff, low-powered, and can be extremely harsh on the arm. They also “die” (lose their elasticity and playability) well before they actually break.

  • Best For: Advanced, aggressive baseline players who generate their own power and have fast swing speeds to unlock the string’s spin potential.

4. Natural Gut

The original tennis string. Despite all of our modern technology, nothing has completely replicated the unique properties of natural gut.

 

  • Construction: Made from the serosa (lining) of cow intestines. It requires a highly complex, labor-intensive manufacturing process of cleaning, stretching, twisting, and drying the organic fibers.

  • Benefits: Unmatched tension maintenance, power, and comfort. It stays soft and playable even at very high tensions and is the absolute best string for arm protection.

  • Drawbacks: It is the most expensive string on the market. Historically, it was highly sensitive to moisture and weather, though modern protective coatings have made it much more resilient.

  • Best For: Players with infinite budgets, players recovering from severe arm injuries, or purists who want the absolute peak of feel and performance. It is frequently used in a “hybrid” setup (mixed with polyester) by touring pros.

5. Kevlar (Aramid)

Kevlar strings use the same material found in bulletproof vests. It is the toughest string available.

  • Construction: Braided aramid fibers.

  • Benefits: Near-indestructible durability. If you break every other string on the market in a matter of hours, Kevlar will survive.

  • Drawbacks: It is incredibly stiff, entirely devoid of power, and brutal on the arm. It also loses its initial tension very rapidly.

  • Best For: Chronic string breakers. Because of its harshness, it is almost never used for the entire racket; it is typically used only for the main strings, with a softer synthetic gut or multifilament used for the crosses to soften the string bed.
